Students Refurbish Team GBs Bobsleigh
With a kind donation from HMG Paints, Level 2 Paint and Body Refinishing students at the Manchester College Preston Street Campus were given the exciting opportunity of working on the Great Britain (GB) bobsleigh before it was used at the Winter Olympics qualifying stages in Austria last month.
The GB bobsleigh team, who are all service men and woman with the armed forces, needed the students to repair damage which was sustained on the track and take off as much of the old paint as possible to reduce the weight and maximise track times. The new paint colours applied were British Red Cross red and the blades were finished in black. All the paints were donated by HMG Paints, which cost in excess of £400.
Neil Hughes, Course Tutor Level 2 Paint and Body Refinishing said: ‘This was a great opportunity for my students to be involved in. Once the Bobsleigh arrived the students were really eager to work, they took great care of it and got stuck in straight away. This project was certainly a massive boost to my students’ knowledge.’
Lamin Deen, GB Bobsleigh Team said: ‘The paint refinishing job the students at The Manchester College carried out has pushed us to achieve a great set of results to start the season. The sleigh received no end of compliments from the rest of the world teams, pilots, coaches who competed in Austria,’
Aiden Lindsay, Level 2 Paint and Body Refinishing student said: ‘We were really keen to work on the bobsleigh; we couldn’t believe it was the GB team’s sleigh and something we were working on would be on television. Our tutor showed us the correct methods to repair and prepare the sleigh for paint, it was a fantastic project to work on.’
